How to clean artisankeycaps/resin keycaps?

Cleaning resin keycaps requires a gentle touch to ensure you don't damage the material or the intricate details of the design. Since these are often handcrafted or involve specific injection molding, avoiding harsh chemicals is key.

Here is a safe and effective way to clean them:

1. Preparation
Remove the keycaps: Use a wire keycap puller to gently lift the caps off your switches. Avoid plastic ring pullers if possible, as they can sometimes scratch the sides of delicate resin.

Prepare a cleaning bath: Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, as high temperatures can potentially warp some types of resin.

2. The Cleaning Process
Mild Soap: Add a few drops of mild dish soap (avoid anything with harsh degreasers or bleach).

Soak: Let the keycaps soak for 5–10 minutes to loosen any oils or dust.

Soft Brush: Use a very soft-bristled toothbrush or a soft makeup brush to gently scrub the surface and any crevices.

Note: Do not use abrasive pads or stiff brushes, as these can create micro-scratches on the matte or granular finish of the resin.

3. Rinsing and Drying
Rinse: Thoroughly rinse each cap under cool running water to remove all soap residue.

Air Dry: This is the most important step. Place the keycaps stem-side up on a clean paper towel or microfiber cloth.

Wait: Let them air dry completely for several hours (or overnight). Moisture trapped inside the stem can damage your mechanical switches if you reinstall them too early.

Things to Avoid
Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA): Never use alcohol wipes or dips on resin. It can cause "crazing" (tiny cracks), discoloration, or even dissolve certain resin types.

Direct Sunlight: Do not leave them to dry in direct sunlight, as prolonged UV exposure can cause some resins to yellow or become brittle over time.

Ultrasonic Cleaners: While great for plastic caps, the vibrations can sometimes be too intense for artisan resin caps with tiny glued components or delicate internal structures.
